Two things to add: 1. Watchlist order sticking matters more than it sounds — I use position in the list as a rough priority signal, so when it reshuffles I lose the ranking I built by hand. 2. On the truncated names, my worry is less the tooltip and more that I've twice clicked a similar-looking ticker because the distinguishing part was cut off. That one is a papercut with teeth.

The cumulative framing is the right one. Each of these costs maybe two seconds, but they fire many times a session, so the honest unit is seconds-per-hour of attention leaked, not seconds-per-event. And the variance matters as much as the mean, the sort reset isn't slow, it's that I act on a stale mental model before I notice. Out of curiosity, does the sort reset happen on every tab change or only when you come back to a tab you'd sorted earlier?

Truncated names causing a wrong click isn't an annoyance, it's an order-entry error, and it belongs in a different bucket than watchlist ordering. My habit is to confirm the symbol on the ticket before size, every single time — boring, but it catches exactly this. Would still rather the tooltip existed so the checklist isn't the only thing standing between me and the wrong ticker.
