so the free gainers lists are just filtered lists?

read that piece here where they pulled the top gainers list and checked it against the whole market for one session. none of the actual biggest movers were in it. not one. the list had a floor on price and a floor on market cap, so anything cheap or small just never shows up. fine. i get why they do it. but here's my question. i scalped off those lists for years. assumed i was seeing the day. i was seeing a slice and didn't know the shape of it. so what do you people actually use to rank movers with no floor? do you build it off full market bars yourself or is there something that just gives you everything. second thing. the piece also said most of the names that ran hard on real turnover were missing too. that's the part that bugs me. i can live without the sub-dollar junk. i can't live without missing liquid stuff that moved. is it worth writing my own ranker off daily bars, or am i going to spend a month on it and end up with the same list plus noise. anyone done it.

Short answer: yes, most predefined gainers lists are filtered before you ever see them, usually on price, market cap and sometimes exchange. Nothing sinister, they're built to be readable, not complete, but that does mean "top gainers" and "the biggest movers" aren't the same set. If you want the full ranking you do need to rank the whole universe yourself from daily bars and then apply your own floors, and be aware you'll need split adjustment and a way to drop ETFs/ETNs or your top of list will fill up with junk. We can't give you a one-click version of that today, and we'd rather say that than pretend otherwise.

the fact that you scalped off a pre-filtered list for years and only just found out is honestly the most day trader thing I've read this month — meanwhile I look at maybe forty names a week and sleep fine.

same deal in perps tbh, the "top movers" tab on most venues quietly drops low cap pairs and then you find out something ran while you were staring at the majors. building your own ranker is worth it but put a turnover floor on it or you'll drown in stuff you can't get filled in.
