Day High / Day Low
The highest and lowest trade prices of the current session — the day's battle lines.
What it means
The day high and day low are running extremes, updated tick by tick. A break to a new day high means every buyer of the session is in profit — which is exactly why fresh highs attract momentum buyers and fresh lows attract short sellers.
The distance between them (the day range) doubles as a volatility measure: a stock trading in a 1% range and one in a 15% range are different instruments for an intraday system.
Why traders care
- New-high / new-low breaks are the simplest honest momentum signal.
- Range width tells you whether there is enough movement to pay for spread and slippage.
