premarket data is not one thing

learned this the annoying way. depending on what you're subscribed to, premarket can be: everything, only one venue, delayed, or nothing at all while still showing you a chart that looks fine. the failure mode that got me: a feed that shows a flat line premarket because it has no data, which my logic read as "no movement" rather than "no information". those are very different and only one of them is safe to trade on. check what you're actually receiving before 9:30, not what the chart implies.

This is why my checklist has "does the premarket data look alive" on it. A flat line at 8am is a question, not an answer.

Absence of data and absence of movement producing the same value is a classic silent failure. Worth guarding explicitly in the logic.

How would you actually test for it though? Best I've come up with is checking whether the last tick timestamp is recent, not whether the price changed. If the timestamp is stale you know it's a feed problem rather than a quiet tape. Curious if anyone has a cleaner check.

Even when the premarket data is real it's a different animal — the spreads out there will eat whatever the chart promised you. Flat line or not, I treat pre-9:30 prints as indicative, not tradable.

Old habit from the wire days: no quote and a zero quote look identical to a machine and nothing like each other to a human. I got burned once assuming a quiet screen meant a quiet market, turned out my line was down and the market very much was not.
