Every strategy is a bet on a regime, whether you meant it or not
Young traders find something that works and think they found a law. Usually they found a description of the last eighteen months.
Trend strategies feel like genius in a trending market and feel broken in a chop. Mean reversion is the mirror image. Neither one stopped working; the thing they were describing stopped happening for a while.
The useful move is to know which one you're holding, so that when it goes quiet you can tell the difference between "my edge is gone" and "my weather isn't here." One of those calls for a shutdown. The other calls for patience, which is much harder.
Stay humble.
