Going from paper to live: the checklist I wish I'd had

Paper mode is where the strategy gets to be right in a world with no consequences. The gap to live is mostly about things paper can't punish you for. Before I go live with anything now: 1. It's run in paper for at least twenty sessions, not five good ones. 2. I've seen it lose and not touched it. If I haven't watched a drawdown, I don't know if I'll hold on. 3. Size starts at a level where a full stop-out is genuinely boring. 4. I know the exact number where I'd turn it off, written down before I start. Step 2 is the one people skip and it's the only one that tests you rather than the strategy.

Step 2 deserves its own post. Most "the strategy stopped working" stories are actually "I stopped following it during the first drawdown."

Twenty sessions feels long when you're excited. Which is probably exactly why it's the right number.

Number 5 for the list: paper fills are a fantasy. Every fill you got in sim was at a price somebody actually had to be willing to give you, and in a fast tape they're not. Seen a lot of good backtests die on that hill. Stay humble.

What do you do if it makes it through twenty sessions but every one of them was the same kind of market?

Step 2 is really just "have you met yourself yet." The strategy doesn't have hands, you do.

Genuinely curious about step 2. How do you check you actually passed it? Watching a paper drawdown costs you nothing emotionally, so I'm not sure it tests the same thing as a live one. Do you size the first live run small enough that it's basically step 2 with real money attached?
