how i handle the 2am shift without babysitting every fill

hey all, night owl here as usual ☕ figured i'd write up how my overnight routine actually works since a few people asked in another thread. nothing fancy, just what's survived a year of me being awake at weird hours. basically i split my night into two modes. first couple hours i'm actually watching — that's when i place anything discretionary, manual entries, whatever. after about 3am my brain is soup and i've learned the hard way that soup-brain me makes bad decisions, so everything after that is either already bracketed or it doesn't exist. every position gets its exit orders attached at entry, no "i'll set the stop in a sec". that one habit fixed more of my problems than any indicator ever did. the part i still fight with is order state. crypto never closes so there's no clean daily reset like equities have, and i've woken up to situations where i genuinely couldn't remember if something was a leftover from tuesday or a fresh fill. so now i tag everything with a session label when it goes in and i do a five minute reconcile before i go to sleep. Open orders vs what i think is open, and if those two lists don't match i cancel everything and start clean rather than trying to figure it out tired. other thing: i keep the number of pairs stupid small at night. like three. liquidity gets thin and spreads widen and i've paid for that education already. wider stops, smaller size, fewer things to look at. curious what other overnight/odd-hours people do. specifically— do you let anything run unattended while you're actually asleep, or do you flatten? i've gone back and forth on this for months and still don't have a rule i'm happy with.

opposite schedule but same problems. my version: - pre-open checklist runs before i touch anything - flat before i step away, always. no exceptions, no "it's fine, it's got a stop" - reconcile open orders twice: once before, once after your session tag idea is good, stealing it.

the reconcile before sleep thing makes sense to me but how do you actually do it? like are you exporting the open orders somewhere and diffing them, or just eyeballing two screens? i tried to script something similar for my paper stuff and immediately got confused between orders that were open vs partially filled vs cancelled-but-still-showing. probably a me problem but i couldn't get the states straight in my head at all.

flatten. always flatten. held overnight for years thinking the stop had my back. it didn't, twice. thin book, price gapped through, filled way past where i wanted. you don't get paid for the hours you're unconscious.

The thing I'd note is that overnight risk isn't symmetric with daytime risk — the tail is fatter and the fills are worse, so a stop that behaves like a stop 90% of the time behaves like a market order at whatever's on the book the other 10%. Your "wider stops, smaller size" adjustment is basically sizing for that fatter tail, which seems right. Have you ever gone back and measured your actual overnight slippage versus your daytime slippage on the same pairs?

the 'i'll set the stop in a sec' line hit me right in the chest. i did exactly that once, told myself i'd attach it after i got a coffee, and then i got distracted and went to bed. woke up to a position that had gone somewhere i wasn't emotionally prepared for. not a huge one thankfully but the shame lasted longer than the loss did.

The soup-brain framing is honestly the healthiest thing in this post. Most people know they're impaired at 3am and try to push through anyway because stopping feels like quitting. You built a rule instead of relying on willpower, which is the part that usually breaks. Do you find you sleep better since you started the reconcile, or does the flatten-vs-hold question still follow you into bed?

Morning-side of this and I love the session tag idea too, I do something similar with a colour per day just so nothing looks like it belongs to a week ago. Also "three pairs" — genuinely I think that's the whole post right there.

perps guy so I do hold through the night, but only stuff that's already small enough that I'd shrug at the worst case. the funding side is what people forget. You can be totally fine on price and still bleed just from sitting there for eight hours in a crowded direction. my rule is basically: if I need the leverage to make the trade interesting, I'm not sleeping on it. learned that at 4x, would not recommend the education

Everyone saying "always flatten" is really saying "I don't trust my sizing", which, fair, neither do I. But flat isn't free either. You pay the spread twice and in thin books that's not nothing. The actual answer is probably size small enough that the answer stops mattering, which is boring and nobody wants to hear it.

three pairs is the real answer, everything else is bookkeeping!! one thing i'd add. I stopped putting resting orders out overnight and switched to alerts instead. if it pings and i'm awake, great, i decide. if i'm asleep, nothing happened. thin-book breakouts at 3am lie to me constantly, they look like momentum and it's just nobody being there!

Genuinely curious what happens if you just delete mode two entirely. You've already decided soup-brain doesn't get to make decisions, so what's it still doing at the keyboard? Speaking as someone who holds for weeks and sleeps like a log. The trades I'm least worried about are the ones I couldn't touch even if I wanted to.
