Most "research" here is looking at charts until something appears

Said with affection, including about myself. The failure isn't looking at charts. It's that we look, notice, and then go find confirming examples — which is exactly the procedure guaranteed to produce a belief regardless of whether the thing is real. The fix is boring: decide what would disprove it before you go looking. If you can't name an observation that would change your mind, you're not researching, you're collecting.
