The opening auction is data, and I was ignoring it

I had been treating everything before the bell as noise. Then it occurred to me that the opening auction publishes an indicative price and a matched quantity, updating as orders arrive — which is a read on the day's interest that I was throwing away. We have the same thing and I had never looked at it. The opening auction publishes indicative prices and imbalance information before it prints. That's a real signal about how much the market wants this name today, available before anyone can trade on it. I haven't built a strategy on it yet. What I've done so far is add it to my morning read: an auction with meaningful size behind it means something different from a name that opens on nothing. Two weeks in, it's already changed which names I let through my filter. Posting it as a "why did nobody tell me" rather than a technique.

Worth adding that auction imbalance is one of the few pieces of genuinely forward-looking public information retail gets. Most of what we watch is a record of what already happened.

The indicative price path in the last few minutes before the cross is probably more informative than any single snapshot — a name that drifts steadily vs one that jumps when a big order lands are different distributions. Have you been logging the whole update sequence or just the final indicative?

I'd want to know how much of the auction size is just mechanical though, index funds, closing-to-opening flows, that kind of thing. If a name always opens on decent size because of who holds it, the level tells you nothing and only the deviation from its own normal does. Would you tag each name with a baseline first, or are you eyeballing it?

There's something calming about a signal that arrives before you're allowed to act on it. No urge to click. You just read it and decide whether to care.

Fair points all. - yes, logging the full update sequence now, only started that this week - no baseline per name yet, that's the obvious next thing - eyeballing it so far, admitted as much in the post Mostly it changed what I skip, not what I buy.
