my 2am rules, or how i stopped fighting thin books
hey all, been meaning to write this out for a while, partly to see if anyone else does the same or thinks i'm being silly.
i trade crypto mostly between midnight and 4-5am my time, which is just when i'm awake and the house is quiet. took me a long while to accept that this session is a different animal from what everyone talks about during US hours. spreads are wider, book is thinner, and a move that looks like conviction is often just one size order eating through nothing.
so my process now is basically three rules i wrote on a sticky note:
1. size down. whatever i'd take in a busy session, i take about half at night. not because the setup is worse, but because my fill is worse and my stop is more likely to get wicked out by noise.
2. no market orders on anything except getting out. i got taught this the annoying way, chasing a breakout with a market order and paying way more than i thought i would. limits only now, and if it runs away without me, fine, it wasn't my trade.
3. one setup per night. i only look for the same continuation pattern i've traded for ages. no experimenting at 3am, my judgement at 3am is not judgement, it's vibes.
the part i'm still working on is journaling. i tell myself i'll write the trade up in the morning and then i wake up and the reasoning is gone, just a fill and a number. lately i've been screenshotting the chart at entry with a one line note before i sleep, which helps a bit but feels clunky.
anyway, curious if other night people have their own version of this, or if you think low liquidity hours are just something to avoid entirely. i can't really avoid them, it's the time i have.
