Watching from my phone without micromanaging

I used to keep the desktop open on a second monitor all night, which meant I slept badly and intervened more. Now I only get pushed the things I'd actually act on: a fill, a hard exit, a disconnect. Everything else waits for morning. The trick was being honest about which alerts I'd genuinely respond to at 3am versus which ones just made me anxious. If an alert doesn't have an action attached, it isn't an alert, it's a worry.

"If an alert doesn't have an action attached, it isn't an alert, it's a worry." Framing this.

I went the other way first — alerts on everything, and just learned to ignore all of them, which is worse than having none.

Alert fatigue is as old as the ticker tape, son. I once had a pager set to buzz on anything moving more than a couple percent and by month two I was sleeping right through it with the thing on my chest. Your rule about action attached is the same lesson written better. Stay humble.

Yes!! I killed all my price alerts and kept only fills + disconnect and honestly my entries got BETTER because I stopped talking myself into stuff at 2am. Anxiety alerts are just FOMO with a notification sound!

Two things I'd add: 1) log every 3am intervention you *did* make and score it a month later. Mine were net negative and that data killed the habit faster than willpower. 2) careful about tuning the alert list too tightly to the last drawdown, that's overfitting your notifications the same way you'd overfit a strategy.

Love the rule. I'd only add a disconnect alert is worth keeping even if you can't act at 3am, because you can at least check position size exposure at wake-up before anything else. My checklist has "what is currently on" as line one for that reason.

fills and disconnects. thats it. everything else is noise you pay for with sleep.

So you're telling me the notification that price crossed a line I drew while tired isn't actionable information? Shocking. Though I'll defend one worry-alert: I keep a wide one purely so I know what kind of morning it is before I open anything.

Something that helped me was writing the action next to each alert before enabling it. If I couldn't finish the sentence "when this fires I will ___", it didn't get turned on. Took my list from about a dozen down to three.

The honesty part is what stands out to me. Noticing which alerts were anxiety wearing a useful costume. Did the sleeping better come first, or did the calm come from having fewer decisions to make? I've found for me it's a loop, and it takes a couple of weeks before the quiet stops feeling like neglect.

swing trading solves this by accident — nothing happens at 3am that my thesis cares about, so my phone is face down and boring. you day folks invented the 2am decision and then had to build a system to survive it lol. but yeah, "if it has no action it's a worry" is going on a sticky note.
